How to make brownies without eggs:
These vegan brownies are made without any store-bought egg replacers. Instead, they are made using simple pantry staples, like applesauce and almond butter, for a naturally rich and fudgy texture. This vegan dessert is perfectly moist and chocolatey, and prove you don’t need processed ingredients to bake an indulgent plant-based brownie!
Vegan Brownie Ingredients
Baking homemade vegan brownies is simple and requires only one bowl and just 12 ingredients, that you may already have stocked in your kitchen. Here is what you will need:
- All purpose flour. This recipe can also be made gluten-free by using a 1:1 gluten-free flour.
- Cocoa powder. You can also use Cacao powder, but I would reduce the amount to 3/4 cup, instead of 1 cup since cacao powder is more strong in flavor and can be mildly bitter.
- Cane sugar. If you’re trying to be 100% vegan, purchase organic cane sugar. Some other sugars are processed with bonemeal and are not vegan.
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Non-dairy milk. I usually use soy milk or oat milk.
- Unsweetened applesauce
- Almond butter. For a tree-nut free recipe, you can use tahini or any seed butter.
- Coconut oil
- Apple cider vinegar
- Vanilla extract
- Dairy-free chocolate chips and/or chopped walnuts.
Even though these vegan fudgy brownies are super chocolaty and rich, they are actually low in fat compared to other brownie recipes.
The reason for this is because most of the oil is replaced with applesauce and almond butter. Replacing oil with these ingredients reduces the amount of fat and adds fiber to the brownies, which makes them healthier. Don’t worry, you cannot tell you are eating healthier vegan brownies!

The batter will be thick, but that is how it is supposed to be. Also, the posted recipe calls for chocolate chips or walnuts, but I always add both…Walnuts in brownies is a personal preference and I love the texture and flavor that walnuts add to this fudgy chocolate vegan brownie.
Get creative and add anything you like. Some alternatives to chocolate chips and walnuts include freeze-dried raspberries, chopped dates, sunflower seeds, pistachios, or chopped vegan peanut butter cups!
