How To Make The Perfect Smoothie

The perfect smoothie is not to thick, but not watery either. The texture should be smooth and any veggie flavors should be hidden by the fruits. Here is how to make the best smooth and tasty smoothie:

  1. Use one frozen banana as your base. See tip below for freezing bananas.
  2. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of seeds for healthy fats and a nutritional boost. I used hemp and flax in this recipe.
  3. Add twice as much fruit as vegetables. In this blueberry weight loss smoothie, I used 1/2 cup zucchini and 1 cup blueberries.
  4. If you’d like to add more flavor with juice, use half juice and half water for your liquid. This will keep the calories low to help with weight loss. I like to use fresh pressed orange juice or pineapple juice. If you’re looking for an affordable juicer, I recommend this slow masticating juicer.

PRO SMOOTHIE TIP:

Frozen bananas give smoothies a thicker and creamier texture than fresh bananas. It’s like adding ice cream, but without the calories. To freeze bananas, peel them, break them into 1 to 2-inch pieces, and freeze them in an airtight glass container. I avoid plastic baggies to reduce plastic waste, so I choose glass tupperware, like these, to freeze my bananas.

Having a good blender is also helps get that super smooth texture. I use my Vitamix every single day and I absolutely LOVE it. My mom (who is vegan too) uses a Ninja, which is much cheaper, and it works well for smooth smoothies and other things, like cheese sauces too.

The key to losing weight is burning more calories than you eat. Instead of starving yourself, fill up on low calorie foods, like vegetables. This blueberry smoothie that is great for weight loss has zucchini in it because it will add volume to the smoothie, without adding calories. The 1/2 cup of zucchini added to this blueberry smoothie adds only 10 calories!

Like all smoothies, this blueberry smoothie is even better when enjoyed through a straw! I’m a huge fan of the BYOS movement (Bring Your Own Straw) because plastic straws are detrimental to sea turtles and other aquatic wildlife. I love these eco-friendly bamboo straws from Bambaw because they are washable and reusable, which makes ditching plastic straws easy. I keep a few of these Bambaw straws in my car in case I need a smoothie, juice, or iced coffee while I’m traveling or out shopping for food. They’re life saving!

Smoothies are a great way to start the day and also work well as a plant-based pre-workout snack. They pack a whole lot of nutrition into one glass (or bottle). When I have a smoothie for breakfast everyday, I feel more energized and just better overall.
